Privacy Policy

This version (Version S4S 1.1) of the Safari for Schools Privacy Policy is effective as of 19 February 2015.

  1. This privacy policy (the “Policy”) discloses the privacy practices of Safari Books Online, LLC (“Safari,” “we,” “us,” “our”) for the Safari for Schools Service (the “S4S Service”) websites that are owned and operated by Safari and that link to or display this Policy. Other Safari websites display or link to the privacy policy that applies to them.

    The S4S Service is provided by Safari in conjunction with O’Reilly Media, Inc. as part of their joint commitment to the White House ConnectED Initiative.

    The S4S Service is provided free-of-charge by Safari to U.S students through 12th grade, and their parents and teachers, who have accounts in good standing with an authorized third party authentication service (“Authentication Vendor”).

    Authentication Vendor accounts are available to students, and their parents and teachers free-of-charge. Each Authentication Vendor is required by Safari to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy and Protection Act (also known as “COPPA”) and other U.S. laws that apply to the collection, storage, processing, transfer, use, and protection of personally identifiable information that is collected by the Authentication Vendor from and about S4S users.

  2. Your access to and use of the S4S Service is subject to the Safari for Schools usage rules (“TOS”) and to this Policy. If you violate this Policy or the TOS, or if you violate the rules or policies of the Authentication Vendor regarding its services, your use of the S4S Service may be terminated. Do not use the S4S Service or our S4S websites if you do not agree to abide by this Policy, the TOS, and the Authentication Vendor’s rules and policies, or if you are not a U.S. resident.

  3. Safari does not collect Personal Information from the S4S Service users, except that Safari collects PI provided by you when you request technical support, as described in Section 6 below or if you contact us regarding this Policy, as described in Section 10 below . “Personal Information” or “PI” means individually identifiable information about you (such as your first and last name, home or other physical address, email address, or telephone number), or information about activities directly linked to you.

  4. Safari uses PI collected by the Authentication Vendor solely for purposes of the Safari internal operations required to provide the S4S Service to you, and for responding to your requests for technical support.

  5. The Authentication Vendor has its own privacy policy, and the collection, storage, processing, transfer, use, and protection of PI, and PI collected by the Authentication Vendor is subject to its privacy policy.

  6. When you request technical support regarding access to or use of the S4S Service, we will use the PI that you provide to us in order to respond to your support request. When you request support, a ticket associated with your request is set up on our system. The PI that you provide to us when you request technical support is stored, processed, and used to respond to your support request. When the ticket set up for your support request is closed, we delete the PI that you provided to us with regard to that request, except as needed to comply with our internal recordkeeping policy.

  7. Safari uses administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect the security, confidentiality and integrity of PI against loss, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, and destruction.

  8. You can assist us and the Authentication Vendors in protecting your PI by keeping your Authentication Vendor password and login information secret, and making sure that you terminate user sessions, close the browser, and log out whenever you have accessed the S4S Service from a shared computer. Because no security methods are 100% effective, we cannot guarantee absolute PI security.

  9. Please note that this Policy may change from time to time. We will not reduce your rights under this Policy without your explicit consent. If we make any material changes, we will post a notice on this website before the change becomes effective. The previous version of this Policy will be archived for your review.

    If you contact us with a question or complaint about our privacy practices, we will use any PI that you provide to us only for purposes of responding to you, and we will store it for only as long as may be required under our internal recordkeeping policy.
